Frequently Asked Questions about Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is powerful medicine which aids in strengthening the immune system and serves to prevent disease, control pain, and increase both the ability to function and quality of people’s lives. Acupuncture is a well developed whole health care system based on natural energetic laws.

When needles are inserted into the body, they cause changes in the nervous and hormonal systems, bringing them into a more balanced and improved function. This in turn alleviates the symptoms you are experiencing.

There are other techniques that fall under acupuncture and to learn more about them see “Treatment without needles” on this webpage.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture should not hurt. It is normal to sometimes feel heaviness, aching or tingling around the site of the needle insertion. In general, most people find acupuncture very relaxing.

How deep do the needles go?

Usually the needles are inserted to a depth of 1/4 to 1 inch. Depth depends on the size of the person, the site, and the nature of the problem.

How long are the needles left in place?

Once the needles are inserted, they are left in place for 20 to 40 minutes, again depending on your condition. During this time, you should remain still and relax.

Are the needles clean?

It is law in Alberta that all acupuncture needles be sterilized, single use needles. That means the needles are only used once and then disposed of. This prevents any spread of infections and ensures that every needle is clean and safe to use.

How many treatments does it take?

This depends on the condition being treated. If your condition is fairly new and short-lasting, you may only need one or two treatments. However, if it is a chronic condition you have had for a long time, you may require 5 to 15 treatments. Some very chronic conditions will require many treatments.

How long does each treatments take?

You first visit will include a full Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment where you are asked a number of questions about your health. Your tongue will be observed and your pulse taken: these are two very important diagnostic techniques in Chinese medicine to determine certain aspects of your health. This takes approximately half an hour. The rest of the time is spent getting your treatment. Expect to spend about 1 1/2 hours for your first session and 1 hour for subsequent sessions.

Is Acupuncture covered by Alberta Health?

Unfortunately, Alberta Health does not cover acupuncture treatments, but most private insurance companies will. Please check with your insurance provider.

What are the costs of the treatments?

Each treatment is $70.00. There is a one time assessment fee of $30.00 added to your first visit. (Prices include GST).

What are the qualifications of the person performing the acupuncture?

Karen McInnis is a Registered Acupuncturist and Doctor of Chinese Medicine. In Alberta, one must attend an accredited college and pass a very stringent government exam to practice in Alberta. Karen fulfilled these requirements, graduating at the top of her class. She also taught for five years at the Canadian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Karen has numerous years experience in both conventional and complementary medicine. For more information, visit her biography on this website.
